Susan Bordo “Hunger as Ideology”

I found the article written by Susan Bordo, titled “Hunger as Ideology” to be very interesting and hold many truths. The fact that women are not allowed even forbidden to enjoy food, indulge in sweets yet, the more a man can eat the better. Women are suppose to cook and make delightful dinners and desserts yet, to even think of a woman enjoying much foods is become almost taboo. Women are pressured to be a size 0 and the fact of the matter is most women aren’t! Yet, women will do anything to reach this almost impossible desire. Food for women has become something to survive not to enjoy. Yet, men on the other hand are encouraged to “feast” on a daily basis. Commercials only make this point even more apparent and true. In commercials women are shown as super skinny eating chocolate flavored yogurt and it taste almost as good as the feeling of shopping for shoes. Women are supposed to make the dinner and look incredible while keeping a Pleasantville appearance and personality. The way women and men are viewed in society is ridiculous shows, like “King of Queens” show an overweight man constantly eating and playing poker and the more he eats the funnier it is yet, his wife is  skinny and attractive. The more this pattern occurs the more eating disorders will rise; being healthy is what is important!

Richard Rodriguez “The Achievement of Desire”

After reading the article by Richard Rodriguez, titled, “The Achievement of Desire” it started to make me wondered. How many other individuals feel this way about wanting to break free, and be different then there own parents. Rodriquez wanted so much to be educated and spent his whole adolescence doing just that. The fact that he always felt that his parents weren’t proud of him, is disheartening to imagine. One of my favorite lines of the article is “I came to enjoy the lonely good company of books”. I feel that line alone holds so much power the line applies that books can bring you places you never imagined yet, the whole process of reading is very isolated and makes one separated from others. Rodriguez wanted so badly to separate himself from his family that he was never able to go back. They lack common conversation and the compatibility that once existed between him and his family was no longer invisible.

Quilts for Aids

On Monday, when we went as a class to see the quilt for victims of aids it was both heart breaking, and eye opening. It so sad to see how many are affected by aids and how it is a deathly disease with no cure. To see the pictures and all the items sow onto a quilt that represented and were important to that individual was break hearting. Yet, at the same time, it makes you realize that as long as you are fighting, and trying to stop aids from affecting others; then those individuals will never be forgotten. There deaths must not be in vain!

My best friend of 12 years mother has HIV; I found this out about 4 years ago and was shocked! Her mother lives in the city and I would always go with her to visit her, she is the sweetest, kindest person you could meet. I would have never thought that she had HIV but my friend told me it was from wrong choices in her past that now she must pay the consciences in the present. I guess so many of us forget that what we do now as young adults can have a major impact on the future person we become, it was very upsetting to hear this news. I guess there are so many individuals with problems and inner struggles that on the surface you would never know or even expect. This is why you should never judge anyone, or trust to easily because you truly may never really know someone!

Craig’slist

Craigslist Founder Won’t Sell Out

Criaglist.org owner, Craig Newmark does not want to sell off his popular community classified site any time soon. Even if it means billions of dollars are sitting on the table. Craig states, that he wants to stay true to the “not-solely-for profit-but-for community” model he has used with the site. “Who needs the money?” Craig Newmark said in an interview at the 06’Cross Media Week conference. “If you’re living comfortably, what’s the point of having more.” Newmark, remarks. It is stated that Criaglist gets more then four billion page views per month with just 22 employees.

I think it is honorable that Newmark is not in it for the money. He states he knows individuals that have more than a billion dollars and there not the least bit happier because of it. Craiglist was the website that helped me find a place to live so I would be able to take summer courses at St. Rose. I think it is a very easy to use site and navigate. I would recommend the site to anyone looking for a place to live or to sell something due to the fact, to post is free unlike most sites.

300 million and growing!

U.S. population hits 300 million mark

The nation’s population officially hit 300 million, at 7:46 a.m. on Tuesday when the Census Bureau’s population clock rolled over to the big number. The Census Bureau has a “population clock” that estimates a birth every seven seconds, a death every 13 seconds, and a new immigrant every 31 seconds. The 200 millionth American was born in 1967, and the
United States adds about two-point-eight million people a year.
It is crazy to think there are 300 million Americans in the world! Yet, I often wonder what will happen in the future with the
United States population. With the improvement of technology and science, we are now founding many cures; and are coming allot closer to founding cures for many of the leading killing cancers. The question I wonder is if they do found the cures for Americans leading causes of death, what will happen to the population especially; with social security. The age to receive social security used to begin at 63 now however, it has been pushed back to 65 due to the fact, the life span of the average American is longer then it was in the past. Yet, with more and more Americans living longer I think hat the social security funds will run out!
I think it is great that individuals are living longer yet, I also wonder if the government will prevent some cures from being discovered to help control the population. Yet, at the same time, Americans today are getting married later and having less kids; the average number of children in a household is now 2.2 children yet, I remember being younger families had three or more children. I believe in the end everything will balance out, as it should.

Married life is changing

In 2000, married couples made up 52 percent of 105.5 million American households; today married couples  stands at slightly more than 49.8 percent or, 55.2 million American households a dramatic difference from just six years ago!  That is a huge decline from just six years ago also, more then 14 million families are headed by single women while; only 5 million are head by single men. The article goes on to state that, 36.7 million households belonged to a category described as “no family household;” a term that experts  said referred primarily to gay or heterosexual couples cohabiting out of formal wedlock.  In addition, there were more then 30 million unmarried men and women living alone; who are not categorized as families.I remember being younger watching all the beloved Disney movies such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Beauty in the Beast wondering when I would get married and to whom. It is crazy the dramatic difference in the idea of marriage people hold today. It sad to think that 50% of a marriages end in divorce now in days, it often makes me feel slightly different about marriage it’s become such a risk I’m not so sure I’m really willing to take!

I remember when I was in elementary school; everyone had a mother and a father that lived together. Yet, there was always those one or two children that had divorced families with only one parent in the household they were always looked oat as minorities because that was very unusual to see. Yet, now for a marriage to last more then 10 years is like a miracle, the biggest and most upsetting of all this information is how much affairs occur now.  My mother and I talk on the phone at least ever other night and she calling me to tell me that so and so across the street had an affair with a co-worker or the softball coach. The craziest thing of all is the individuals that are having the affairs there the ones that have been married 20 to 25 years! I feel the biggest reason is marriages get boring become routine and once the kids appear everything is down hill! I feel it is important to keep things interesting and fun always doing and trying new things. It is more then a little depressing to see where our society is headed family was become something that is now feared and slowly disappearing. I want to be like how my parents are going strong at 25 years and still in love! Even with three girls that love to shop, they are still happy and now that children have left the “nest”, they seem to have become even closer!
